Japanese Swords Instruction
Battōjutsu No Kihōn
(抜刀術の基本)

Battōjutsu (抜刀術) is a form of traditional Japanese swordsmanship for sword drawing and general swordplay. Both Battōjutsu and Iaijutsu are similar, yet the difference is evident in the emphasis of each style; Iaijutsu emphasizes on cuts after unsheathing and drawing a sword, while Battōjutsu focuses on quickly drawing the sword and responding to a sudden attack, making its techniques more battlefield field oriented.

Common Questions Before the Class
→ I have never practiced martial arts. Can I attend?
→ I have practiced martial arts but never used weapons. Can I attend?
Yes. This workshop is conducted in a non-competitive environment and is structured specifically for beginners. Battōjutsu principles will be introduced progressively throughout the class, accompanied by safe and controlled drills for ease of understanding.
→ I don’t have training weapons. Can I borrow one?
Yes. A limited number of training wooden weapons will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
→ What should I wear? Do I need a ninja outfit?
A martial arts uniform (dōgi / keikogi) is recommended, but not required. If you do not have one, comfortable athletic clothing such as sweatpants and a shirt—preferably black—is acceptable. And NO, a full ninja uniform (Shinobi Shōzoku 忍び装束) or face covering is not required. Historically, ninjas rarely dressed this way.
